Bio
Hi, I’m Nellie Nakhel! I write picture books that celebrate differences, encourage self-expression, and help children feel seen and proud of who they are. Inspired by my own experiences with dyslexia and mental health, my stories aim to spark empathy, curiosity, and confidence in young readers.
I hold a BA in Psychology, a BA in IDS Human Nature, and an MS in Higher Education. I currently work at UNC Chapel Hill as a higher education advisor and lecturer, helping students thrive in college and beyond. Through my books and professional work, I hope to inspire individuals to embrace their unique strengths and follow their passions.

Personal Story
I’ve been writing stories for as long as I can remember. As a child, I created entire worlds for my stuffed animals, imagining adventures, friendships, and challenges for them. Those early stories sparked my love of storytelling.
People often ask me where my ideas for stories come from and honestly, I think it comes from empathy. In my life I have witnessed so many struggles that others have faced and many of them go unnoticed by society.
In high school I wrote a letter to my math teacher thanking her because she helped me learn math and explained it in a way that I could understand. I wrote that I understood how much in life she was juggling and appreciated the hard work she gave to her job. Later that week she gave me a hug, thanked me, and offered me an internship. It was the simple act of acknowledging her struggle and strength that made such as large difference for both of us.
It is experiences like this that drive my desire to share unheard stories and help others feel seen.

Thank you!
